Every paver driveway, retaining wall, pool removal, and ADU starts with excavation. We bring the right equipment for each Bay Area site condition — from compact track loaders in Saratoga’s tight hillside access to standard excavators in flat Fremont backyards. CSLB #1075979.
The dominant subsoil across Santa Clara, Alameda, and Contra Costa counties is Diablo clay — a highly expansive material that swells significantly when wet and shrinks when dry. Excavated Diablo clay is unsuitable as structural fill under any paved or built-upon surface. A contractor who backfills a pool excavation or paver sub-base with the clay they just removed is creating a future settling problem that will show up 3–7 years later as sunken pavers, cracked concrete, or an uneven yard.
“I always show customers the soil we’re removing. Bay mud is black and smells like the Bay. Diablo clay is red and sticky when wet. Neither of these belongs back in the ground under something structural. The disposal cost is real — but it’s the right cost.”
— Thiago Souza, Owner · Souza & Son’s Inc · CSLB #1075979All excavated Diablo clay, Bay mud, and unsuitable fill is transported to licensed Class III disposal facilities or recycling centers. We maintain weight tickets and disposal receipts for every load — required documentation for permit closeout in most Bay Area cities. Clean concrete from demolitions is recycled as aggregate base material, reducing landfill impact where possible.

“Backyard grading before our paver and turf installation in Berryessa. Fast, clean, precise grade — in and out in two days. The crew was meticulous and left the site completely clean each day.”

Transforming sloped or uneven backyards into level, usable surfaces for patios, play areas, and turf installations. We use cut-and-fill techniques that minimize off-site disposal where soil conditions allow.

Pool removal requires excavation, material sorting, concrete hauling, and engineered backfill — all services we provide in-house as part of every pool removal project. No third-party subcontractors for hauling.

Foundation pad excavation, utility trenching, and grading for detached ADUs throughout the Bay Area. We work with general contractors and structural engineers to deliver precisely graded, compacted building pads with full permit documentation.

Every paver installation begins with excavation to engineered depth. Our compact equipment handles excavation in tight residential access conditions — standard 36-inch gates, hillside driveways, and constrained urban lots throughout the Bay Area.
The details that separate a 40-year installation from one that needs attention in 10 — and why we don’t cut corners on any of them.
811 — Call before every excavation — required by California law
California law requires calling 811 (Underground Service Alert) before any excavation. Utility markings are respected throughout every project. We call 811 on every job — it’s not optional and we don’t skip it.
Class III — Licensed disposal for Diablo clay and Bay mud
Expansive clay and Bay mud require Class III licensed disposal facilities. We maintain complete disposal documentation — weight tickets and facility receipts — for every load. This documentation is required for permit closeout and provided to every customer.
8-inch — Maximum compaction lift for structural fill
Where compacted structural fill is required — pool backfill, paver sub-base, ADU building pads — we compact in maximum 8-inch lifts to specified density. Thicker lifts create voids that compress over time. This is the engineering standard that prevents future settlement.
48 hr — Turnaround from estimate to mobilization on most projects
Most Bay Area dirt removal and grading projects mobilize within 1–2 weeks of estimate approval. For simple backyard leveling projects without permit requirements, we often mobilize within 48–72 hours.

CSLB #1075979 · Bonded & Insured · 500+ Bay Area projectsNo subcontractors. No surprises. Here’s exactly what happens on every dirt removal project.

Thiago assesses existing grade, target finish grade, soil type, and cubic yardage. Grading permits are required for earthwork exceeding 50 cubic yards in most Bay Area cities — we identify this at the estimate stage and manage all submittals. We also call 811 before every project to locate underground utilities.

Before any excavation begins, all underground utility markings from the 811 call are reviewed and flagged on-site. Excavation near marked utilities is done by hand until safe clearance is established. There are no shortcuts on utility protection.

We excavate using compact track loaders and mini excavators sized for each site’s access conditions. Native soil is segregated — topsoil is stockpiled for reuse in planting areas, Diablo clay and unsuitable subsoil is loaded separately for disposal. We never mix clay with clean soil for disposal cost savings.

All unsuitable material is transported in licensed dump trucks to Class III disposal facilities or recycling centers. We maintain weight tickets and disposal receipts for every load. Complete disposal documentation is provided to every customer for permit closeout records.

Subgrade is shaped to design grade with positive drainage slopes away from structures. Where compacted sub-base is required, we compact in maximum 8-inch lifts to specified density, verified with a nuclear density gauge on projects requiring documentation. The finished grade is exactly what was specified in the permit plans.

Grading permits are required for earthwork exceeding 50 cubic yards in most Bay Area cities. Hillside grading near drainages or in designated geologic hazard zones may require permits for smaller volumes. We assess permit requirements at the estimate stage and manage all submittals at no additional charge.
Dirt removal in the Bay Area typically runs $50–$140 per cubic yard all-in — excavation, loading, hauling, and licensed disposal. Bay mud and Diablo clay disposal runs higher than hillside decomposed granite due to Class III facility requirements. A standard backyard leveling of 40–50 cubic yards runs $2,000–$7,000. Free written quotes after on-site measurement throughout the Bay Area.
Clean topsoil can be reused in planting areas. However, Diablo clay, Yolo clay, and Bay mud are unsuitable as structural fill under paved areas or structures — they expand when wet, causing long-term settlement. We assess soil quality at the estimate stage and clearly identify what can be reused versus what must be removed and disposed.
We maintain weight tickets and facility receipts for every load transported to licensed Class III disposal facilities or recycling centers. Complete disposal documentation is provided to every customer for permit closeout records. This documentation is required by most Bay Area building departments for grading permit closeout.
Simple backyard leveling of 30–50 cubic yards typically takes 1–2 days. Larger grading projects with permit requirements take longer — add 5–15 business days for permit processing. Pool demolition dirt removal is included in the 3–5 day overall pool removal timeline.
Souza & Son’s Inc provides residential excavation, grading, and soil hauling services throughout all 9 Bay Area counties. Every project is managed personally by Thiago with compact equipment sized for residential access conditions — from tight Saratoga hillside lots to flat Fremont backyards. We manage all grading permits, call 811 before every project, and provide complete disposal documentation on every job.
Bay Area soil conditions vary dramatically by location and directly determine excavation cost, disposal requirements, and whether excavated material can be reused. Diablo clay (dominant across Santa Clara, Alameda, and Contra Costa counties) is highly expansive and must be disposed at licensed Class III facilities — it cannot be reused as structural fill. Bay mud (Bay flatlands near Centerville, Irvington, Alviso, and the shoreline) is similarly unsuitable and heavier to haul. Decomposed granite (Mission San Jose foothills, Saratoga hills, East Bay foothills) can often be reused as compacted base material, reducing disposal costs. We assess soil type at every estimate and give accurate disposal cost projections before any work begins.
Grading permits are required for earthwork exceeding 50 cubic yards in most Bay Area cities. Projects within hillside overlay zones, near designated drainages, or in geologic hazard areas may require permits for smaller volumes. BAAQMD (Bay Area Air Quality Management District) dust control compliance is required for excavation projects disturbing more than 4 cubic yards of soil — a threshold exceeded by virtually all residential grading projects. We manage all permit applications, BAAQMD notifications, and dust control compliance as part of every project.
